The book design for 'The Eye, The Sky, The Altar' marks the inaugural monograph examining the artistic works and creative process of Rithika Merchant. In addition to showcasing her artwork, the book presents an insightful conversation between the artist and Fariha Róisín.
Merchant's artistic exploration delves into comparative mythology, scientific inquiry, and speculative fiction, weaving together creatures and symbols that form her distinctive visual lexicon. Her creations resonate with our collective heritage while also envisioning potential new realms for us to inhabit. Nature serves as a central motif in her oeuvre, accentuated by organic forms and a subdued colour palette.
Drawing inspiration from Merchant's enchanting aesthetic and muted colour scheme, our design for the monograph echoes her artistic ethos. The hardbound cover is crafted from a matte, uncoated paper in a soothing matcha green hue, adorned with a gold screen print and a circular laser cut detail. The typography chosen for the cover reflects a whimsical charm, mirroring Merchant's own artistic sensibilities. The book features a hardcover with exposed binding, incorporating both offset printing and screen printing techniques. Additionally, two distinct paper types are utilised to emphasise various elements within the book. The conversation between Róisín and Merchant is presented as a small, screen-printed booklet bound within the larger volume.
